Softshell is a term used to describe clothing which whilst not being waterproof, does offer some water resistance combined with excellent breathability and wind proofing. This makes for clothing that is very comfortable if you are exerting yourself in a cold climate. It also makes clothing that is stretchier and harder wearing than 100% waterproof shell jackets.
